Teachers shop for free before the first day of school

Teachers shop for free before the first day of school

Guilford County School’s first day is Monday and teachers are filling their shopping carts with teaching supplies for their classrooms.

The Guilford Education Alliance helps teachers with this.

“We want to make sure that teachers have everything they need to succeed when they enter the profession. We know that teachers can do a lot with very little,” said Karen Hornfeck, vice president of the Guilford Education Alliance.

They say the camp could not be built without the help of others.

This system is kept running by donations of used supplies and additional money.

“We want them to know that we support and value them as a Guilford County community, and that is why we are here today,” Hornfeck said.

Teachers can purchase new and used materials through a points system, and for today only, those points have been doubled.

The Education Alliance opened this option to new teachers like Megan McCraw to support the 20% increase in the number of teachers needing resources in Guilford County.

“I’m sure everyone knows that it’s hard to get teaching materials, especially when they’re free. This is a great opportunity that every teacher should take advantage of,” McCraw said.

The camp is open year-round to Guilford County teachers.
