Teenager charged in connection with Omaha Northwest High School shooting to appear in court

A 14-year-old boy who allegedly shot and injured a classmate at Omaha Northwest High School on Tuesday is scheduled to appear in court at the Douglas County Courthouse on Wednesday afternoon.

According to court documents, 14-year-old Ramone Jefferson is charged with first-degree assault, use of a firearm to commit a crime and illegal possession of a weapon on school property. The boy is accused of shooting and seriously injuring a 15-year-old student on Tuesday. He is in stable condition and remains hospitalized.

According to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office, Jefferson was charged as an adult.

His court date is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at the Douglas County Courthouse.

The shooting occurred shortly after noon on Tuesday. Jefferson shot the 15-year-old once in the stomach, according to investigators. Omaha police had previously stated, “Investigators believe this was an isolated incident and the victim was targeted by the suspect.”

After the shooting, Northwest High School and other schools in the area were put on lockdown. Jefferson fled the building after the shooting. Police found him shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday and arrested him.

Omaha Public Schools canceled classes at Northwest High School on Wednesday. Students are scheduled to return to school on Thursday.

Omaha Public Schools Superintendent Matt Ray said Tuesday that staff would thoroughly review the circumstances of the shooting, including evaluating current and possible new security measures.

The shooting in Northwest occurred less than a week after two students and two teachers were shot at Apalachee High School in Georgia.
