Tesla’s planned electric vehicle charging stations in Malaysia have been thrown into disarray after reports emerged that the US automaker had halted production at its Thai plant

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 – A Thai newspaper’s report that Tesla is shelving plans to build a $5 billion electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing center in the country has raised questions about the U.S. company’s other big-ticket programs in Southeast Asia, including Malaysia.

Thai newspaper The Nation cited a single anonymous government source as saying the Elon Musk-linked company would now focus exclusively on developing its charging stations, but remained vague about its plans for Malaysia and Indonesia.

“Tesla is currently only discussing charging stations, the factory plans are on hold not only in Thailand but worldwide. They will not be continued in Malaysia, Indonesia or anywhere else except China, America and Germany,” the unnamed source was quoted as saying.

Malaysia Post could not immediately independently verify this news report.

According to the Thai government source, the decision followed the dismissal of a group of Tesla executives who visited Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy between November and December last year.

Tesla opened its Malaysian headquarters in Cyberjaya, Selangor late last year.

Malaysia’s Ministry of International Trade and Industry also announced on March 1 that Tesla will launch at least 50 electric vehicle charging stations nationwide, as well as so-called “experience centers”, service centers and a “supercharger” network in the country.

Tesla confirmed last October that it had put plans for a mega factory in Mexico on hold for economic reasons.

Previous news reports indicated that the concerns were largely due to U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump’s promise to impose a 100 percent tariff on vehicles made in Mexico.
