Texans legend explains how CJ Stroud can improve after ‘Best Rookie’ quarterback season

CJ Stroud is a real star for the Houston Texans. In his second season in the NFL, he is considered MVP. With a well-staffed wide receiver team, the Ohio State University product is on his way to becoming a superstar.

According to Texans legend JJ Watt, Stroud had the “best rookie quarterback season ever.” It’s common knowledge that Stroud’s first NFL season was top-notch, but Watt went a step further than most.

“He had the best rookie quarterback season ever,” Watt said. “He’s got to keep doing what he’s been doing. Leading his guys, being a great teammate, spreading the ball all over the field. He clearly had so much composure and control of the offense in year one. Now he’s got a whole offseason to keep going with his new teammates, learn the playbook and get to know the coordinators. You can only expect better things.”

Expectations are high for Stroud as he enters his second year, as he set high standards for himself after his rookie season, when he rushed for 4,108 yards and 23 touchdowns with just five interceptions in 15 games.

Stroud turned a four-win Texans team into a 10-win playoff team. Houston even beat the Cleveland Browns in the playoffs last season. What the Texans quarterback did in his first year laid the foundation for an even better season in 2024.

Watt also put it simply, claiming Stroud needs to “keep doing what he’s been doing.” If he does that on a larger scale and with a better team around him, the 21-year-old quarterback will start to get more and more exposure and MVP attention.

“Their expectations are extremely high, as they should be,” Watt said of the Texans. “They obviously had a great year last year and have contributed a lot to that. DeMeco Ryans is an incredible coach, so they should have very high expectations. I’m really excited to see what they do.”

The Texans are certainly one of the most exciting teams for every NFL and football fan in the coming season.
