DENISON, Texas (KXII) – The $20,000 donation to the Junior League of Grayson County will fund the program that will be called “Lion Lockers.”

The Junior League of Grayson County is an organization of 83 women committed to helping the children of Grayson County. On Tuesday night, they received a $20,000 donation, but some would describe the donation as bittersweet.

“Today we celebrate one of the largest monetary donations ever received by the Junior League, also known as the Denison Service League,” said Heather Shilling, president of the Junior League of Grayson County. The league’s largest donation since the organization was founded in 1955 will go toward helping Denison students avoid starving.

The donation comes from the Denison Lions Club. “The Denison Lions Club is dissolving its branch here in Denison and these are the remaining funds,” Shilling said.

“We just lost a lot of members, you know, with the move, some passed away, and so our club’s membership has dropped,” said Kerrie Hunt, who has been a member of the Denison Lions Club for 22 years. “We’ve been trying to figure out what to do over the last few years, either revive the club or pass the torch to someone else, and we’ve decided to pass the torch to this wonderful organization that seems to be growing and thriving, and hopefully they can use these funds to continue to serve our children here in Denison.”

The Junior League of Grayson County works around the clock, organizing events year-round with support from the Denison community. “We work for the children of Grayson County, providing them with clothing, food and helping them in any other way,” said Treasurer Linda StClair.

The Denison Lions Club says goodbye, but its donation ensures the continuation of its services.
