Honda Pilot 2018
Thanks to its three rows of seats and quiet cabin, the Honda Pilot is a great choice for large families, according to Blake Shaw, writer and contributor to the car advice and information site All About Wheels. “The Pilot’s spacious cabin is ideal for both long road trips and running errands,” she said. “The 2018 model is the most reliable, especially the one with the six-speed automatic transmission.”

2017-2023 Mazda CX-9
For families looking for a crossover SUV that combines practicality and sportiness, the Mazda CX-9 is an excellent choice, Shaw noted. “A sleek cabin, responsive suspension and high safety ratings make it an excellent choice,” she said. “According to Kelley’s Blue Book, the authority on all things automotive, the second generation of the car, model years 2017 through 2023, has received consistent praise.”
Honda CR-V (model year 2018)
Seeing so many CR-Vs on the road is no coincidence, as Rob Dillan, a car market expert and founder of auto advice site EVhype, recently told us. “The Honda CR-V is known for its reliability, excellent fuel economy and spacious interior. It offers a smooth ride and ample storage, making it perfect for the family,” Dillan said.
Ford Escape 2019 – New all-wheel drive SUV
Although it’s not as spacious as some of its competitors, according to Car and Driver, the Ford Escape should be on your shopping list if you have a smaller family, according to Dillan. “The Ford Escape is a great all-around compact SUV with good fuel economy, a comfortable ride, and ample storage. It’s a solid choice for daily commutes and family trips.”
Volkswagen Passat 2019
If your family is into high-tech but only has a used-car budget, the VW Atlas could be a good compromise, Dillan said. “This model is known for its spacious interior with three rows of seats and a user-friendly infotainment system,” he said. “The Atlas is ideal for families who need extra space and modern tech features.”
Toyota Highlander (2017-2019)
For parents who put safety at the top of their list, the Toyota Highlander is a standout, Shaw said. “The 2017 through 2019 models feature the company’s latest fuel injection system and have earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick Award,” she said. “A spacious interior makes the Highlander a pleasant vehicle for traveling and even hauling cargo.”
Ford Explorer 2018-2019
For families who plan on doing a little off-roading, Shaw said the Ford Explorer is a great SUV. She said it also has a spacious interior and is typically reasonably priced. “It’s ideal for city driving and off-road exploration, has a powerful engine lineup and a spacious interior,” she said. “The most reliable model years for a Ford Explorer are 2018 and 2019, which is the fifth generation, according to many publications.”
Nissan Pathfinder 2016/2018/2020
A spacious interior and impressive towing capacity put the Nissan Pathfinder on Shaw’s list. “Its attractive features include user-friendly technology and comfortable seats,” she said. “The model years highlighted are the fourth generation, 2016, 2018 and 2020, which offer a mix of off-road capability, passenger comfort and performance.”
Subaru Forester 2018-2019
Is your family an outdoorsy type? If so, Shaw said you should put the Subaru Outback on your list. “With its standard four-wheel drive, rugged construction and top-notch safety ratings, it’s an ideal choice for camping and off-road adventures,” she said. “Compared to most newer models, the 2018 and 2019 models offer better transmissions and engines.”
2018-2020 Kia Sorento
The Sorento offers a good balance of space, reliability and price, Shaw said. “It’s a great choice for frugal families who need spacious cabins and comfortable rides,” she noted. “All three third-generation models are highly regarded for their high quality, stylish design and cutting-edge technology features.”
Hyundai Santa Fe (2019-2020)
With its spacious, feature-rich interior, the Hyundai Santa Fe is known for its affordability, Shaw said. “It’s an economical and reliable choice with high safety ratings. Every model from 2019 to 2023 received excellent marks from Kelley’s Blue Book, with 2019 and 2020 receiving special mention. There hasn’t been a car with more consistent and exemplary ratings than this one.”
2019 Mazda CX-5
If your family is looking for an SUV that has some pep and also turns heads, Mazda’s CX-5 is a great choice, according to Dillan. “Praised for its sporty handling and stylish design, the CX-5 also offers good fuel economy and a comfortable interior. It’s ideal for families looking for a fun SUV to drive.” No wonder Car and Driver gave this car a 10/10.
