The 16th Annual Wayne’s Wiffle for a Wish takes place in Bangor

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) – People of all ages wore the iconic yellow bat in Bangor today.

Wayne’s Wiffle for a Wish began at 9 a.m. and runs until the final game ends at 8:15 p.m. All proceeds benefit Make-A-Wishes of Mainers.

The event is tournament style with four divisions and corresponding championships. The divisions include Open, Classic, Youth and Executive.

Wayne’s Wiffle for a Wish President Wayne Harvey explained why he decided to start the event

“Our middle daughter had some health issues when she was born,” Harvey said. “We were in and out of the hospital and doctor’s visits, but never anything really serious or life-threatening, but I saw a lot of kids who weren’t going to come home, and so I figured I had to do something to help. So we talked about it and went through a bunch of ideas. My wife finally just said, do it. Stop talking and do it. And that’s what we did. And we didn’t know what was going to happen. We didn’t know where it was going to go. We had been fighting for 16 years, but now we’re at this point and we’ve raised a couple hundred thousand dollars.”
