The annual Farmers Market Cake Contest will take place on September 15

The Takoma Park Farmers Market will host its annual pie contest on Laurel Avenue in Takoma Park on Sunday, September 15. The event is a fundraiser for the market’s Federal Benefit Match Program and has raised over $10,000 since its inception to provide shoppers with the opportunity to purchase fresh, local food at the market.

The market invites home bakers and professional bakers to submit their best 1 or 2 crust pies made with seasonal ingredients available at the market – sweet or savory. Celebrity judges taste the pies and winners are chosen in the following categories: Best Apple Pie, Best Peach Pie, Best Other Pie – Sweet, Best Other Pie – Savory, Best Children’s Pie, Most Unusual Pie, Yummy Mess Award and Professional Baker. After judging, the market slices the pies into pieces and sells them to the public. Tickets for pie slices are sold at the Farmers Market, which is adjacent to the event.

The 2024 celebrity judges include Nevin Martell, food critic, cookbook author and photographer; Chris Brown, owner of Zinnia, Motorkat and Takoma Bev Co; Jeff Harner, owner of Sang Froid Distillery; and Takoma Park Mayor Talisha Searcy.
