The Athens restaurant hosts a weekly musical tradition

The Athens restaurant hosts a weekly musical tradition

About an hour north of Chattanooga there is a little restaurant where a small group of guys play bluegrass.

This week’s Pay It Forward recipient helps one of the players who says he’s been a little slower on the violin lately.

But he doesn’t let that stop him.

At Mexi-Wing in Athens you can enjoy bluegrass with your burritos.

“We appreciate what they do for Hayes because what he does for Hayes, he does for us.”

Randy Rouse has nominated a chauffeur of sorts for Pay It Forward, sponsored by the McMahan law firm. His name is Roger Moore.

With $500 on his back and humming a bluegrass song, Randy spotted Roger and gave the band the signal.

“Roger, I wonder if I could interrupt you for a moment…”

Roger Moore and his brother Ken drive Hayes Dixon to the restaurant every Thursday to play the violin.

“What you do for Hayes, you do for us. We really appreciate you taking him to many bluegrass festivals and jam sessions like this one. We just wanted to let you know.”

But instead of keeping the money, Roger turned around and gave it to Hayes.

Hayes Dixson is 96. He says…

“They take me everywhere I need to go. If I need something fixed, they do it. And also, if I fall, they come and help me to the ground.”

We asked how old his violin is.

“It’s over 200 years old. The other one I play all the time… It’s in my house and it’s over 300 years old.”
