The Best Waterfront Rentals in Montana for Spring and Summer

The Best Waterfront Rentals in Montana for Spring and Summer

From small towns like Philipsburg to big cities like Missoula, Montana seems to have it all.

However, most people travel to Montana to explore natural wonders. With the Rocky Mountains running through the state, there’s plenty to do in terms of outdoor adventures. And the fun is doubled when there’s a body of water nearby.

I’ve explored the far corners of Airbnb to find some of the best lakefront rentals in Montana, ideal for summer or spring travel.

Some stays are much stranger (in a good way) than I could have imagined. From historic railroad cars to shipwreck-themed cabins, the state is full of unforgettable lake (and river) rentals.

This is where I plan to stay if I make it to Big Sky Country.

Scandinavian style lakefront (Lick Lake)

Eureka, Montana

Let this Scandinavian-inspired rental transport you to Montana’s most scenic forest. The interior is modern and clean, as the title suggests, but it also has all the Montana amenities you’d expect, like a wood-burning fireplace, lake and mountain views, and space to roam.

Plus, you’ll have access to the owner’s private lake, Lick Lake, and a brand new sauna. The lake also offers additional amenities like a kayak and canoe. (There’s also a really cute dog in the Airbnb photos – but I can’t promise he’s included in the rent.)

Historic railroad car on the river bank (Missouri River)

Cascade, Montana

I promised you vintage railroad cars, and here we are. This rental was once a Northern Pacific Railway mail car, but has since been converted into a really nice two-bedroom trailer. But that’s hardly the best of what’s on offer here.

In addition to a very cool and historic unit, guests are also treated to a private hot tub overlooking the Missouri River. Sure, it’s not nearly as inviting as a lake – but the backyard was landscaped to provide views and a lounge area to enjoy the atmosphere.

Stay at the shipwreck (Williams Lake)

Salmon, Idaho

I know—this rental isn’t actually in Montana. It’s just across the border in Idaho…which is close enough to still be worth mentioning. Plus, it’s built in the shape and style of a pirate ship, making it fantastic for anyone who enjoys waterfront rentals.

When I say “pirate ship shape and style,” I mean it has three floors that mimic the three decks of a ship. One of the bedrooms is shaped like a ship’s bow, while one of the living rooms is modeled after a Victorian-era pirate ship saloon. Plus, there’s a direct path down to Williams Lake. There’s even a rustic pagoda that you can loot.

Lone Pine Hollow (Private Pond)

Helena, Montana

Lone Pine Hollow is located near the host’s home, which includes several acres of private land and a working pond for swimming.

Unlike most other listings here, Lone Pine Hollow is equipped with all the amenities you need to enjoy the water. There are paddle boats and canoes, as well as a huge lawn that extends to the pond where you’ll want to spend time.

This place seems ideal for a large gathering. The upstairs of the house is lined with beds, making it a good retreat for younger groups or families. In fact, the hosts also allow small events (for an additional fee). I personally love an open-minded Airbnb host who offers access to a private pond.

Yellowstone Rangers Outpost (Yellowstone River)

Gardiner, Montana

As the title suggests, this place is located near Yellowstone National Park, making it a prime choice for anyone looking to explore the park during the day. But this rental also allows you to immerse yourself in the rugged outdoors.

The back patio offers a perfect bird’s eye view of the Yellowstone River, so you can enjoy the wonders of the park without ever having to set foot inside. Plus, this rental has been recently renovated, so you’ll have all the amenities you’d expect from a modern Airbnb.

Duck Lake Loft

Babb, Montana

Like the Yellowstone River rental, the Duck Lake Loft offers stunning views of Duck Lake. While you’re not right on the water, you can overlook the riverfront forest—and since the loft faces west, you’ll get a truly unobstructed view of the sunset.

The living room also overlooks Duck Lake, so you can enjoy the view right from the couch. Plus, it’s close to Glacier National Park, so you have direct access to this coveted park.

Placid Lake Paradise

Seeley Lake, Montana

If you’re looking for a traditional lakefront stay, then I’ve found the perfect place for you. This newly opened property is located right on Lake Placid and offers a whopping 11 beds and 3.5 baths. That’s a huge win for large groups of all kinds.

But it’s the lakefront location and private boat dock that won my heart. It makes it easy to get out on the water – whether you want to fish, take a swim, kayak or just enjoy the lake views.

Cowboy Lake Lodge

Emigrants, Montana

Looking for a classic cowboy design for your rental? (There are, in fact, and you’re not alone.) Look no further—this rental has just the country design you’re looking for. From its stone fireplace to its leather couches, Cowboy Lake Lodge has an austere vibe.

Plus, you’ll have direct access to the lake, which is framed by stunning mountains in the background, including Emigrant Peak. The lake also has private biking and hiking trails for you to explore the outdoors. If you enjoy fishing, you’ll be happy to hear that Cowboy Lake is stocked with trout.
