Choosing a desk is not an easy decision. Gone are the days when your desk was just a place to file emails or set your laptop down when you weren’t using it: With many people working entirely from home or on a hybrid schedule, most of us are working from home at least one or two days a week, and our home desks are being used more than ever.

Because desks are used so frequently, a simple surface or small console desk just doesn’t cut it anymore. You need space for a monitor, a place for your coffee mug and water, cable organization so you don’t get tangled up in cables all day – the list can get long, especially if you need an ergonomic setup or your work tasks involve multiple screens. Finding a desk that meets all of these needs And does not cost several hundred dollars And looking halfway decent is harder and more daunting than you might think, a fact I learned firsthand this summer.

After moving into an apartment where I finally had space for my own desk (a luxury I hadn’t had in years!), I was excited and began searching for the perfect desk. However, my excitement quickly waned when I realized that all the desks I liked visually were out of my price range, and all the desks I could afford looked rickety, like they wouldn’t survive another move. For financial efficiency and sustainability reasons, I wanted a desk that would last, that was big enough for all my work supplies, and that didn’t cost an exorbitant amount of money—and I finally found the combination of all of those things in the form of the Ezra Modular Desk with 6-Cube Storage from the Better Homes & Gardens Collection at Walmart.

I’m really happy to have found this desk, which has already inspired my coworker (aka my boyfriend) to look for a nicer desk of his own.

So what makes this desk so great? First, let’s talk about the price: $140 isn’t exactly cheap, but when many of the other desks I looked at cost $300 or more, $140 is really a steal. For that price, you even get more than just a work surface: The desk includes a six-shelf cube shelf. Perhaps best of all, the cube shelf and desk aren’t connected, so you can put them together in the perfect L-shaped arrangement for your space, or even move them apart and use the shelf as a proper bookshelf. This flexibility is just another feature that makes the desk durable. If you move or rearrange your space, you can also rearrange the setup to use both pieces as needed.

Speaking of durability, I was very (very!) pleasantly surprised by the quality of the desk. The legs and frame are made of sturdy metal (though they’re stained to look like wood), and although the rest of the desk’s hardware is engineered wood rather than real wood, it’s thick and sturdy—no part of this piece feels flimsy, shabby, or like it might fall apart on the way to the moving truck. Honestly, the desk feels so durable that I’m shocked at the price.

And finally, the look. My desk is a Light Honey color, and it looks simple and understated in my space. It’s serious (it’s a desk!) but not too formal; if you want something darker, a sleek walnut color is also available. There’s a nice lip around the edge of the desk so I don’t accidentally knock things off, and with the cube shelf on the side, I have tons of storage space for all my desk stuff. The cube shelf basically triples the use of the desk; with a few cube shelf organizers, it’s become my all-purpose storage spot for books, office supplies, paperwork, and anything else that doesn’t fit anywhere else.

The details

The desk came in a very large, very heavy flat box. (Getting it into my apartment was probably the hardest part of the entire assembly process.) After my boyfriend and I dragged it inside, it took about an hour to assemble the desk and storage unit. The instructions were clear and the steps were easy, if a little time consuming. Assembly requires screwdrivers; they are not included.
