RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – In just a few weeks, a fundraiser will take place to support the James River Park System.

“Camera to Canvas” features photographs and artwork by local artists from the region.

The event will take place on Friday, September 13th, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Willow Oaks Country Club.

Guests can expect an evening full of art, food, cocktails and more.

For decades, the James River Park System has inspired countless hikers, climbers, paddlers and nature lovers.

It has also inspired many artists in the region, including photographer Bill Draper.

He is also the author of “A Photographic Journey Through The James River Park System.”

Draper’s work has also inspired others to use his images as a template for pen and paper or brush on canvas.

“It’s a little humbling, but it’s just something I really enjoy doing, going out and taking pictures,” Draper said. “To be able to share them with me is just a privilege.”

Camera to Canvas will bring together some of the region’s finest artists with their favorite Bill Draper paintings to create original works for a charity auction benefitting their mission.

The goal of the event is to raise funds for Friends of the James River Park, the largest nonprofit support group for the James River Park System.

“Every year we raise and spend money to expand, protect and beautify James River Park,” said Josh Stutz, executive director of Friends of James River Park. “The event will focus on Bill Draper’s photography.”

You can bid on individual photographs, artwork, and a variety of silent auction items.

Now over 100 pieces will be auctioned.

Over 50 of Draper’s photographs and over 50 paintings are based on them.
