The Championship State Amateur Baseball Tournament ends today at Cadwell Park

The 92nd Annual South Dakota Amateur Baseball Tournament concludes today on its twelfth glorious day. What a great tournament it was, and we begin with today’s lineup and the results from the weekend.

The lineup for today’s state tournament at Cadwell Park begins at noon with the Class A championship game between the Renner Monarchs and Sioux Falls Brewers, followed by the 92nd South Dakota State B Amateur Baseball Tournament, which features the championship game between the Del Rapids PBRs and Platte Killer Tomatoes at 2 p.m.

The Platte Killer Tomatoes are now in the Class B State Tournament Championship Game thanks to a stellar pitching performance by Michael Buitenbos of the Platte Killer Tomatoes, who carried his team on his shoulders and led the Platte Killer Tomatoes to their first ever championship game. The Platte Killer Tomatoes defeated the Dimock Emery Raptors 4-0 in the final game. Michael Buitenbos allowed six hits and four walks in the complete game performance and struck out four batters on 128 pitches. The Killer Tomatoes scored three runs in the first half of the 7th quarter.th inning when Sheldon Gant hit a sharp ground ball to Dimock-Emery’s shortstop Drew Kitchens, who sailed his throw past first baseman Phil Johnson and made an error. Michael Buitenbos scored from second base and that got the crowd at the plate going as he crossed home plate. Michael Buitenbos continued to zero Dimock-Emery in the final two innings, leaving 12 runners on base. The Platte Killer Tomatoes finished the game with eight hits, including two hits and two RBIs by Hunter Hewitt. Michael Buitenbos added two hits, while Seth Muth, Gant, Townsend and Hayden Kuiper also added hits. The Platte Killer Tomatoes face the Del Rapids PBR today at 2 p.m.

Saturday’s action continued at the 92nd Annual State B Tournament which included the 2nd Semifinal game of the day between the Garretson Blue Jays and the Del Rapids PBR. This game was won by Del Rapids PBR by a final score of 5 to 3. In this game, a dominating pitching performance was from the PBRs’ Trey Randl who threw five strikeouts and was efficient with the help of the defense behind him in his seven innings. He threw 72 strikes on 106 pitches and allowed just three runs on three hits. Brayden Pankonen was the driving force behind the PBR offense as he drove in a run, scored a run and had two hits including a double. Zach Puetz drove in a run with a double in the win. Del Rapids PBR advances to the championship game of the State B Amateur Baseball Tournament and will face the Killer Tomatoes today at 2 p.m.

The Sioux Falls Brewers are now in the Class A finals thanks to a big win on Saturday following a 10-8 victory over the Sioux Falls Squirrels. The Brewers’ Sam Siegel scored five runs as the Brewers advanced to the Class A finals on Saturday. Siegel had five RBIs on two hits, a walk, a double and a three-run homer, Riley Johnson scored two runs on two hits and a walk, TJ Miller and Jack Sutton each had a hit and an RBI, while James Borges, Ian Strum, Sam Baier and Drue Soukup each had hits in the win.

Carson Askdal allowed two runs on five hits and two walks in six innings and had four strikeouts. For the Flying Squirrels, Daniel Buteyn allowed four runs on two hits and four walks and had three strikeouts. Zach Dibble and Lucas Wilber each had three hits and combined for three RBIs, Dexter Payne and Jaden Holzer each scored a run on two hits, while Trevor Hurley scored a run on a hit and two walks in the loss. The Sioux Falls Brewers will face the Renner Monarchs for the State A championship on Sunday at noon.

The Renner Monarchs advanced to the finals of the Class A tournament on Friday with a 5-2 win over the SF Squirrels. The Monarchs’ Dave Borchardt scored two runs on two hits, Aiden Ladd had two RBIs with a single, Chaz Palmer had two hits, while Jaxon Rosencranz and Ryan Hander each contributed hits in the win.

Ryan Hander got the win on the mound, allowing one hit and recording eight strikeouts in five scoreless innings. For Sioux Falls, Stuart Baruth allowed five runs on seven hits and two walks in eight innings, recording four strikeouts. Trevor Hurley had two hits, Connor Hurley scored one run, while Jack Simonsen and Dylan Ades each had hits in the loss. Renner moves on to Sunday’s Class A state championship game against the Sioux Falls Brewers, which begins at noon today.

The Minnesota Twins travel to Globe Life Field this weekend needing to make up ground on the Texas Rangers in a four-game run for the division title. The Twins are looking to close the gap on the Cleveland Guardians in the AL Central, who are now just 2 games behind them after a 3-2 win on Thursday night. The Twins played longball in Texas on Friday night, with both Ryan Jeffers and Carlos Santana hitting huge shots. Santana’s hit was a three-run blast in the fifth inning that gave the Twins a lead for good and a 4-3 win. The Minnesota Twins made it look easy as they picked up their third straight win over the Rangers on Saturday at Globe Life Field. The Twins’ David Festa got the win and is now 3-2 on the season. The Twins will look to earn their fourth consecutive win over the Texas Rangers when Pablo Lopez, who has an 11-8 record and a 4.67 ERA this season, faces the Rangers’ Tyler Mahle, who has a 0-1 record and a 2.7 ERA, starting at 1:35 p.m. today.

Both the Winner Colome Pheasants and Garretson Blue Jays had their sights set on the State B Amateur Baseball Tournament championship on Friday night. The Blue Jays struck first when Tayson Swatek scored the first two runs of a 5-run top inning and that was all the runs they would need. The Garretson Blue Jays are now in the semifinals of the tournament after defeating the Winner Colome Pheasants 6 games to 3. Nick Bonte of the Garretson Blue Jays struck out nine batters, allowing seven hits and 3 runs and walking two batters in 8 innings to earn the win. Nick Bonte helped himself on the mound by scoring the game’s sixth run. Reed Harter led Winner/Colome with four hits and scored one run. Derek Graesser and Austin Calhoon added hits. The Winner/Colome Pheasants, 22-2, end the season with a loss, while the Garretson Blue Jays are in the semifinals of the tournament.

Friday night’s action at the 92nd Annual State B Tournament included the first game of the day pitting the defending champions Canova Gang against Del Rapids PBR and that game was won by Del Rapids PBR by a final score of 7 to 3. In that game, the performance of PBR pitcher Drew Sweeter was key, who threw just two strikeouts but with the help of the defense behind him was efficient in his eight innings, throwing 77 strikes on 118 pitches and allowing just three runs on 12 hits. Brayden Pankonen was the driving force behind the PBR offense as he drove in a run with three hits, including a double, and scored a run. Garrett Gassman drove in a run with a double and won. Del Rapids advances to the semifinal round of the State B Amateur Baseball Tournament and will face the Garretson Blue Jays tonight at 7:30 p.m.

The Killer Tomatoes are the comebackers, having now won two games in a row, and in walk-off style, as they did last night when they beat the upstart Hartford Humbolt Wood Ducks 8 to 7 at Cadwell Park. With one out, Parkston Mudcat pick-up Jeff Harris hit a ground ball to second baseman Nathan Adrian, who made an error while catching the ball. After Richard Sternberg walked the bases, Michael Buitenbos brought Grant Doom and Harris home with a single to left field.

Platte’s Sheldon Gant tied the score at 7-7 by bringing in Sternberg from third base with an RBI single to right field. Buitenbos, advancing from second base, was out at home plate for the second out. Then Mason Townsend, who was 1-for-3 until the final at-bat. On the eighth pitch of the at-bat, Townsend hit a single down the right field line. That scored the game-winning run to Parkston Devil Ray pickup Seth Muth, allowing Platte to survive and advance to the Class B semifinals.
