The Crow starts at number 8, Deadpool and Wolverine top the charts

The reboot of The Crow had a disastrous opening weekend, opening in 8th place.

The box office numbers are slowly coming in, and the weekend’s earnings for the controversial reboot of The Crow couldn’t be worse. Right now, ComScore has the film at No. 8 for the weekend, with a gross of $4.6 million and a shocking per-theater average of just over $1.6K. No matter how bad the box office outlook was for the film leading up to its opening weekend, no one thought it would crash and destroy like this. In our predictions, we assumed it would open with $7 million and finish at least in the top five, but that was not to be.

This is a catastrophic result for Lionsgate, which shortly after the mega-flop Borderland. These two would-be franchise starters not only had terrible revenues, but Borderland was also despised by the audience and received a rare D+ CinemsScore. At least in terms of audience reaction, The Crow fares better with a B-minus rating, proving that at least some viewers like it (our own readers seemed pleasantly surprised by the film).

Otherwise, it was a fairly quiet weekend at the box office, with Deadpool and Wolverine the recapture of the top spot of Alien: Romulus with a gross profit of $18.3 million. Last week’s champion, Alien: Romulusfell 61% to $16.2 million, coming in second. With a gross of $72 million, the film has a good chance of potentially crossing the $100 million mark domestically, which is a fair result and should lead to more modest budgets Foreigner Films that get the green light. The Blake Lively drama, It ends with us continued to earn strong box office numbers, with $11.8 million over the weekend and over $120 million running. The film has built a reputation through word of mouth and is expected to gross at least $150 million (or maybe more) domestically.

The other new release of the weekend, Flash twicedirected by Zoe Kravitz and starring Channing Tatum, had a modest opening with a $7.3 million gross. With a B-minus CinemaScore, this film will likely take a big hit in the coming weeks, but since it’s being released by AmazonMGM, it’ll be hitting streaming platforms in the not-too-distant future and should make a decent splash, as it’s actually not a bad little film.

The religiously influenced film The Forgehad a solid opening of $6.6 million. It comes from the Kendrick Brothers and is a spin-off of their hugely successful film, War Roomalthough the weekend box office numbers were relatively modest. However, with an A+ CinemaScore, this film could hold its own at the box office.

Whirlwinds

Meanwhile, Universal Twisters continued to perform well, achieving gross revenues of $6.2 million for a total revenue of $248 million. The anniversary re-release of Coralline proved to be a blockbuster, grossing just over $5 million for a gross of $24 million. Rounding out the list were the two biggest animation hits of the summer, Despicable Me 4which increased its gross revenue by $4.4 million from $348 million, while Inside Out 2 The domestic gross was $646 million, up $2.1 million.

Next weekend promises to be one of the slowest in recent history, with Dennis Quaid’s Reagan the only wide publication. Do you think Deadpool and Wolverine will continue to hold the top spot? And what do you think of The Crow‘s box office gross? Let us know in the comments!
