The Kills share cover of Billie Eilish’s “Happier Than Ever”: Listen

About a year ago, long-time scuzz rock duo The Kills returned with God Gamestheir first new album in a long time. This Friday the Kills will follow this album with Happier Girl Sessionsa new acoustic EP, consisting mainly of versions of God Games songs. In addition to these tracks, the Kills also released their version of Billie Eilish’s “Happier Than Ever” today.

“Happier Than Ever,” the title track of Billie Eilish’s 2021 sophomore album, is perhaps her most traditionally rocking song, and it’s also one of her most popular. Rina Sawayama and Black Country, New Road have already covered this song, and now The Kills have released a bluesy, understated version of the track, with Allison Mosshart quietly growling over a fuzzy guitar and a bare click track. The Kills have already tried out an acoustic cover of “Happier Than Ever” in a Sirius session. Here’s what Mosshart says about it:

It’s all Sirius XM’s fault. We were asked to do an acoustic session with them last year and they had asked us to do a cover as part of the session. I’ve always been a huge fan of “Happier Than Ever” and used to sing it at home all the time. It seemed like a good choice as I loved it and loved singing it. After that radio session came on the radio, Laurence Bell from Domino, who was thrilled with our acoustic version of the song, contacted us and asked us to do an electric record. There we were in London recording a non-electric EP and what’s the first song on it? An electric cover of the acoustic cover we did… and the more electric the better. Thank you Billie for writing such a brilliant song.

The Happier Girl Sessions The EP will be released on September 20th by Domino.
