The Klehm Arboretum is a green sanctuary in Rockford

Established in 1989, the Klehm Arboretum and Botanic Gardens encompasses 155 acres of rare trees, specialty gardens, fountains, sculptures, walking trails, water fountains, a koi pond, a visitor center, a greenhouse, a pavilion, picnic areas and activities of all kinds.

Klehm Arboretum and Botanic Garden Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting people with nature.

Price: Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, $8 for students and $8 for children. Children under 3 are free.

Important features: 13 specialty gardens, 2.2 miles of paved walking paths, 6 miles of hiking trails, and a gift shop. Numerous seasonal activities including the Garden Fair and the Woodsong outdoor music series.

Story: In the 1920s, brothers William, Everett and George Taylor operated Rockford Nurseries at 2411 S. Main St. in Rockford. After more than 40 years, the brothers sold their business to the Klehm family, who operated the nursery until 1985 and then donated the land to the Winnebago County Forest Preserve to be used as an arboretum in honor of Carl and Lois Klehm.

Today, Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden, Inc. operates the property in conjunction with the Forest Preserves of Winnebago County.
