The most important weather news of the day: Attention of tropical activity shifts closer to the USA

Water intrusions continue to occur in the tropics and numerous disturbances are observed

Two tropical disturbances raging near the US coast have now been classified as hurricanes by the National Hurricane Center (NHC), although the chances of them developing into at least a tropical depression remain low.

Invest 99L swirls out of the US East Coast, while Invest 90L is the name given to the persistent disturbance that drenches the Gulf Coast. Meanwhile, two disturbances observed in the central and eastern Atlantic have disappeared from the scene.

There remains a significant risk of flooding in New Orleans

Tropical development or not, the persistent system along the Gulf Coast continues to dump several inches of rain on parts of coastal Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi. NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center is rating New Orleans a Level 3 of 4 flash flood risk through Friday, with the flood risk gradually spreading eastward to the Alabama and Florida coasts.
