The most reliable airports in Michigan are not where you think

The most reliable airports in Michigan are not where you think

When you think of airports, you usually think of larger ones like Midway or O’Hare in Chicago, Newark in New York, or even Detroit Metropolitan. However, Michigan still has plenty of flight routes and runways that are busy year-round, and many of them are incredibly reliable.

Cities like Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Lansing and Flint see a significant amount of travel each day and, to their credit, they are all incredibly punctual.

Among the country’s major airports, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport actually does pretty well, averaging just over 10,000 arrivals per day and still maintaining an on-time rate of 82.5% when the weather is good, ranking it fifth in the nation behind Minneapolis, Salt Lake City, Seattle and Atlanta.

But even with that credential, it’s still not enough to be the best airport in the state of Michigan. When taking departures into account, DTW barely makes it into the top 10 airports in the state.

In reality The main airport in the state of Michigan is Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport (AZO). It has an average on-time arrival rate of 88% and an on-time departure rate of 89.1%, putting it way ahead of ALL others in the state.

Directly behind it are the Capital Region in Lansing and the Delta County Airport in Escanaba.

It’s really impressive how well Michigan’s airports manage to keep flights on time, considering how much the weather can affect us in this state even a little bit. When you consider the lake-effect snow on the western side of the state and the Upper Peninsula, it’s incredible that so many flights still manage to land and take off on time.

But maybe that’s the trick. We’re used to cruel and strange conditions, so when things are good, they’re REALLY good.

So if you’re on a strict departure time, you might want to consider one of Michigan’s other airports instead of DTW…assuming you can get a flight to your destination from those other locations.
