The number of oil and gas drilling rigs in the country is declining, while Oklahoma is seeing an increase

Baker Hughes Co.’s latest rig count showed an increase of two rigs in Oklahoma, while the national count decreased by two to 586 rigs.

Oklahoma has added two drilling rigs, bringing the total to 37, according to Baker Hughes’ drilling rig count released Friday. Last year, there were 38 drilling rigs.

The decline in the US includes the loss of two rigs, leaving 483 active in the oil field, while the number of gas rigs increased by one to a total of 98.

Compared to last year, the number of drilling rigs in the country has fallen by 56 from 642. The decline includes the loss of 37 oil and 19 gas rigs. The latest offshore count is 19.

Texas saw a total decrease of three rigs to 273, while North Dakota remained unchanged at 35 and New Mexico remained at 107 rigs. Louisiana saw no change from its count of 38. Colorado remained at 14 rigs. The Red Top Rig Report showed Kansas decreased by one to 29 rigs.

In Ohio, the number of rigs decreased by one to nine, and Pennsylvania remained unchanged at 21. In Utah, the number of rigs remained at 13, in West Virginia, the number remained at five. In Wyoming, the number of rigs remained at 14.

In the Permian Basin, which stretches from West Texas to southeastern New Mexico, the number fell by one rig to 303. In the Eagle Ford in South Texas, the number fell by two rigs to 48. In the Haynesville, the number remained at 32 rigs and in the Marcellus, 25. In the Willison, the number remained unchanged at 36 rigs.

Ardmore Woodford added one rig for a total of 2 rigs, while Arkoma Woodford remained flat at 2 rigs. Cana Woodford’s count fell by one to 16 rigs, and Barnett had another week of no reported drilling activity, according to Baker Hughes.

The DJ Basin remained at 10 rigs and the Granite Wash at 5. The Mississippian came out of its slump and added 2 rigs to finally generate some drilling activity. The Utica count dropped by one to 9 rigs.
