The path to a more environmentally friendly rental industry

The path to a more environmentally friendly rental industry

The ERA Convention 2024 The ERA Convention 2024

On 16 May, during the ERA Convention (https://erarental.org/event/era-convention-2024-the-future-of-rental-solutions/), the Sustainability Committee organised a workshop on how the guidelines on CO2 reporting can be best promoted and used.

The first step of the workshop was a presentation of the ERA Carbon Reporting Guidance Project by Paola Eydieu from KPMG (https://erarental.org/publications/era-carbon-reporting-guidance/).

The group was then asked to discuss the challenges facing rental companies on their journey to decarbonisation.

Here are the key findings:

The limited availability and high cost of electrical appliances pose significant economic obstacles. Suppliers often struggle to meet demand due to limited capacity, making it difficult for companies to efficiently convert their fleet.

The lack of standardization across the industry is making it difficult to integrate environmentally friendly devices, leading to inefficiencies and increased costs.

Assets suitable for the climate of one region may not be suitable for another, making the transition to greener options even more complex.

Challenges also arise from competitive rental priceswhich often makes it difficult to recoup the costs of investing in environmentally friendly equipment.

There is an urgent need change the mindset and raise awareness of the rental value chain among key stakeholders, employees and customers. This is critical to building trust in the reliability and efficiency of greener technologies and the path to a green rental industry.

Companies should develop strategies to foster a culture that values sustainability and understands the benefits of eco-friendly devices. Overcoming these obstacles requires concerted effort, major investment and common sense.

Addressing these issues is critical for the rental industry to make major progress in decarbonisation and contribute to a more sustainable future.
