The perfect couple is the number one show in Netflix’s top 10 this week. But with a Rotten Tomatoes score of just 59%, it’s officially considered a bad show. Since many people, myself included, are excited about the new thriller starring Nicole Kidman, this might be a disappointment. With a score like that, we won’t be including it in our roundup of the best Netflix shows.
But don’t worry, because the best streaming service has plenty of other mystery offerings to satisfy that craving. I’ve put together a selection of different films that I personally love, from the horror and thriller genres, with a mix of different countries too, so hopefully you’ll find something you like here!
The Sinner
Watch on
RT Score: 92%
Age rating: TV-MA
Length: ~40-54 minute episodes
Creator: Derek Simonds
Fans of anthologies should not miss this The Sinnerbecause it follows four self-contained cases over four seasons. At the center of each one is Detective Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman), a troubled detective who has to get to the bottom of some very complex cases.
My favorite is still the first season, which follows a mother named Cora (Jessica Biel) who stabs a couple seemingly out of the blue while on a beach visit with her family. But what makes the average woman do something like that? That’s something Harry and you have to find out for yourself. The other three seasons are just as gripping, but there’s something about the first that has always stuck with me.
Archive 81
Watch on
RT Score: 87%
Age rating: TV-MA
Length: ~ 45 – 58 minute long episodes
Creator: Rebecca Sonnenshine
It is really a shame that Archive 81 was canceled after one season, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth your time. Since it’s the only horror movie on this list, I’m obviously going to champion it, and it really is one of Netflix’s best offerings in the genre. There’s also a podcast of the same name if you’re in the mood for more.
Here, a video archivist investigates the secrets behind a mysterious fire and becomes obsessed with the idea that he can save a young woman from the terrible fate that befell her 25 years ago. Shows like this don’t come around as often as they should, so enjoy them and maybe season 2 will come along after all. I can live in hope.
A murderous paradox
Watch on
RT Score: 100%
Age rating: TV-MA
Length: ~ 45-63 minute episodes
Creator: Lee Chang-hee
If you love K-dramas, habit don’t want to miss this 100% rated mystery thriller series. Honestly, A murderous paradox has everything. It’s dark, it’s funny, it has some crazy twists. I had so much fun with it and highly recommend it.
In the eight-part series, one accidental murder leads to another. An ordinary young man named Lee Tang finds himself in a never-ending cat-and-mouse chase with a wily detective. It all takes a pretty crazy turn, but it’s worth sticking with!
Boy swallows universe
Watch on
RT Score: 87%
Age rating: TV-MA
Length: ~ 49 – 78 minute long episodes
Creator: John Collee
Based on the book of the same name by Trent Dalton, this Australian series follows Eli, a normal boy who has a very difficult life. To save his mother, he must delve into the criminal world full of gangs and drug dealers, while balancing his strained relationship with his biological father and his unique bond with his selectively mute brother.
The seven-part series is difficult but it draws you in immediately as Eli introduces us to his life and all the dangers that come with it. The first episode begins with a gang threatening his family at dinner, and from that point on it only gets wilder.
