Viewership peaked at 33 million in the second quarter

STAMFORD, Connecticut – September 6, 2024 The tension that was in the air before last night’s NFL opener (a lightning strike delayed kickoff until 8:45 p.m. ET) continued until the final play, as the Kansas City Chiefs pulled off a thrilling 27-20 victory over the Baltimore Ravens in the Most watched NFL kickoff game of all time.

A rematch of last season’s AFC Championship Game with star quarterbacks as headliners Patrick Mahomes And Lamar JacksonRavens-Chiefs averaged an NFL Kickoff Game record in Total Audience Delivery (TAD) of 28.9 million viewers on NBC and Peacockbased on live and same-day custom Fast Nationals from Nielsen and digital data from Adobe Analytics. Ravens-Chiefs had the most viewers for the opening game of the NFL Kickoff Game last year (27.5 million for Lions-Chiefs).

NBC Sports’ coverage peaked in the second quarter (between 9:30 and 9:45 p.m. ET) with 33 million viewers.

The average viewership per minute (AMA) for yesterday’s live stream across Peacock, NBC Sports’ digital platforms and NFL’s digital platforms was 4.6 million viewers – the 2and the most simultaneously streamed NBC NFL game of all time, surpassing three NBC Super Bowls (behind Super Bowl LVI in 2022) – and 65% more than last year’s NFL Kickoff Game (2.8 million).

Last night’s game (8:45-11:55 p.m. ET) drew a national TV rating of 12.6/37. 37 is NBC’s largest share for any regular season game since the debut of the SNSF Package in 2006.

With Nielsen’s new Big Data + Panel Methodology, Ravens-Chiefs would be considered the only NFL Kickoff game with an estimated TAD of over 30 million viewers. Under the new methodology, Nielsen’s average audience is expected to increase from 24.3 million to 25.7 million viewers. Adding the 4.6 million streaming viewers, the TAD is 30.3 million viewers.
