The Red Sox season is still alive thanks to Tyler O’Neill’s moon flight

BOSTON – The Red Sox’s season is still hanging by a thread. But Tyler O’Neill made a huge splash on Wednesday night with a monster walk-off home run against the Baltimore Orioles.

The Red Sox ended up winning two of three games against the Orioles at Fenway Park thanks to O’Neill’s big swing in the series finale on Wednesday night. With Baltimore leading 3-2 in the bottom of the 10th inning, O’Neill stepped up to bat with two on base and one out. After batting a high fastball from O’s relief pitcher Keegan Akin, O’Neill charged into the left-hander’s 1-0 slider and sent it high into the night sky for a three-run walk-off home run that gave Boston a 5-3 win.

According to Statcast, O’Neill’s ball flew 120 yards over the Green Monster, but we’re honestly not sure if the ball even landed yet.

The home run was O’Neill’s 30th of the season and his fifth in the last five games. It was his second walk-off hit in a Red Sox uniform.

A huge celebration awaited O’Neill at home plate as the “Not Dead Yet” Red Sox survived to fight another day in the AL Wild Card race. A loss on Wednesday night would have put Boston five games behind the Minnesota Twins in the battle for the American League’s final playoff spot.

Instead, the Red Sox remain four games behind Minnesota, who beat the LA Angels on Wednesday. A four-game deficit with 16 games left — and the Detroit Tigers also one game ahead of them — is not an ideal position. But as slim as the chance may be, the Red Sox still have a chance.

“It’s still there. It’s getting harder and harder, but it’s realistic,” manager Alex Cora said after the victory over the team’s playoff hopes. “We just won a series against one of the best teams in the big leagues. But in our situation, of course, that’s not enough. We have to keep going. We won two series here at home. For some people, that doesn’t feel great. But for us, it does.”

Things won’t get any easier for Boston, as 10 of the 16 games are away games. Seven of the remaining games are against current playoff teams.

“We obviously needed this. Hopefully it’s the start of something big,” Cora added on Wednesday.

That big thing has to be a long winning streak, or at least a significantly higher number of wins than losses to end the season. Three of four wins in the Bronx would be a good start to this seven-game road trip that ends with a trip to Tampa for three games against the Rays. After that, the Twins come to Fenway Park for a decisive three-game series.

The surging Tigers, who are between the Sox and the Twins, now have three games to play against the Orioles in Detroit. Minnesota hosts the Cincinnati Reds, who are under .500, for three games, while the Kansas City Royals (1.5 games ahead of the Twins) visit the Pirates for three games.

The Red Sox are running out of time. But O’Neill’s moon flight on Wednesday at least postponed their possible elimination. Now it’s up to the Red Sox to keep winning and keep the dream of a postseason victory alive.
