The Lakeside Heritage Society (LHS) recycling sale, taking place this Labor Day weekend in three buildings in Lakeside, is one of the largest sales in the area. This huge sale, which has been running for over 50 years, is only possible thanks to the work of several dedicated volunteers who collect and price items throughout the year, as well as the over 50 volunteers who prepare and run the four-day sale. They carefully arrange the merchandise and help shoppers find just the right item, knowing they are making a difference by raising money for this important nonprofit.

Proceeds from the LHS sales, held each year on Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, fund nearly half of the society’s annual budget, which is used to preserve, promote and advance the history of Lakeside, the Marblehead Peninsula and the Chautauqua movement in America. The organization also supports a full-time archivist and two part-time staff members.

“The recycling sale is much more than just a garage sale or flea market. We have so many valuable items including furniture (both indoor and outdoor), tools, bikes, toys, artwork and collectibles,” said Stephanie Leffler, a recycling sale manager. “What is thrown away for one person is treasured for another. So we are recycling and supporting a good cause at the same time. A win-win for everyone.”

Light House Sober Living residents also provide valuable assistance in transporting items from storage to the sale location at the South Auditorium in Lakeside. All are welcome to attend the sale, which runs Friday, August 30 through Monday, September 2. A free two-hour shopping pass is available at the gates of Lakeside Chautauqua.
