The Scappoose family is in shock after two fires destroyed their home

SCAPPOOSE, Oregon (KPTV) – Scappoose resident Jared Beardsley, his wife McKenna and their almost one-year-old son James are still in shock after two fires destroyed large parts of their home on Tuesday night.

“We have lost everything and we don’t even know if anything can be salvaged,” Beardsley said.

When Jared and the Scappoose Fire Department noticed smoke late that evening, they were able to put out the first fire and get everyone safely outside. But around 4 a.m., the fire flared up again. His parents’ house lay in ruins and left many questions unanswered.

“We’re just trying to keep the little things under control. A lot of things are out of our control right now,” Beardsley said.

Fire Chief Jeff Pritcher said in his 10 years with the department, there have been no such double-fire incidents. They usually leave the scene once the fire is out. The veteran said that after responding to nearly 2,500 calls a year, it is extremely confusing to have to return just hours later.

“They’re both connected, we just don’t know how yet,” said Chief Pritcher. “Although it appears we didn’t put out our fire, we’re still trying to figure out how the fire spread to another area where the second fire started.”

While the investigation will take time, this young family of three doesn’t have that time. In the last 24 hours, the community has stepped up a lot and there is currently a GoFundMe page to help in the meantime while they reflect on what they have lost, but also what they still have.

“I’m just thankful that nothing terrible happened. The tragedy could have been much worse. Things like that can be replaced, but people cannot,” Beardsley said.
