Mumbai, October 8: Mumbai airport’s Terminal 2 was in chaos this morning, causing delays in departure of almost all domestic flights. Long queues formed at security checkpoints and passengers jostled and struggled to get to their gates on time. Mumbai airport subsequently released a statement attributing the sudden rush of passengers to the festive season. Navi Mumbai International Airport is expected to be completed by 2024, says Ajit Pawar.

Many passengers struggled to catch their flights on time as they faced long queues at the security checkpoints. “Mumbai airport is a mess. It takes at least an hour to get in and check in, and then there’s this crowd at the security checkpoint. How can someone board the plane 2.5 hours before the flight is due to take off,” said Prakarsh Gagdani, CEO of fintech company 5paisa.com. Several other passengers who had similar experiences shared pictures and videos of the chaos at Mumbai airport this morning. Photos and videos show long queues and a huge rush of passengers.

“With the onset of the festive season, there has been a sharp increase in passenger traffic and this morning, CSMIA (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport) witnessed a sudden surge. Similar was observed at other city airports in the country,” the airport said. “The airport has deployed additional staff to speed up the processing at all security checkpoints and provide a smoother experience to passengers,” it added.

Some passengers also alleged that COVID-19 protocols were violated due to the huge crowd at Mumbai airport. However, CSMIA stated, “In addition, CSMIA is following all Covid protocols laid down by the government to ensure a smoother transition. CSMIA regrets the inconvenience caused to the passengers and is providing them with the necessary assistance.” Considering the growing passenger volume, CSMIA plans to resume operations from Terminal 1 from October 20.
