There is no doubt that the former Bayern veteran will retain his place at Inter Milan after his heroics in the friendly against Chelsea

There is no doubt that after his performance against Chelsea, Yann Sommer will retain his starting place at Inter Milan for the start of the season.

This is the view in today’s print edition of the Turin newspaper Tuttosport via FCInterNews.

This season, Inter have signed a great goalkeeper with the acquisition of Josep Martinez from Genoa.

The Nerazzurri’s plan with Martinez is clear. The Spaniard replaced Emil Audero this season as backup for former Bayern veteran Sommer – but will succeed the Swiss in the long term.

Sommer has only been at Inter for twelve months. But he is already 35 years old.

Inter never signed Sommer as a long-term goalkeeper. Rather, they brought in the experienced goalkeeper as a safe backup immediately after the sale of Andre Onana.

However, it is not the case that Martinez simply wants to wait and see.

The 26-year-old will certainly be keen to get playing opportunities as soon as possible, and those will certainly come over the course of the long season.

Martinez might even be interested in taking over the starting position soon.

There is undoubtedly a danger that the Spaniard will take over the helm and put Sommer under pressure to justify his place in the starting line-up again and again.

But against Chelsea, the 35-year-old did just that.

The Blues put Inter’s goal under a lot of pressure in the last friendly match of the preparation.

And Sommer responded with a series of outstanding saves. The Swiss international’s save against Chrisptopher Nkunku in particular was a prime example of his skills as a goalkeeper.

There is no doubt that Sommer will be in the starting line-up for Inter’s first Serie A game of the season.

And as long as the Swiss can perform like he did yesterday, he should be able to keep Martinez at bay.
