Three people were injured when flames broke out in a parking deck at Charlotte Douglas International Airport on Saturday morning.

Late Saturday, fire officials announced the cause: an engine compartment in one of the four vehicles damaged by the fire had caught fire. Charlotte Fire Department investigators are classifying the fire as an accident.

According to a post by Charlotte Fire on X (the former Twitter), the fire caused $105,000 in damage.

Charlotte Fire first alerted the public to the fire via social media shortly after 9:30 a.m.

“Units on scene, smoke and fire coming from the parking deck,” Charlotte Fire Department officials said on X. “A second alarm has been activated.”

A paramedic took one person to the hospital for further examination, fire officials said.

Sixty firefighters had the fire under control within 40 minutes; the cause of the fire is still being investigated, according to the fire department.

“Airport operations were not affected, but parking delays are to be expected,” fire department officials said.

The fire broke out shortly after 9 a.m. in the hour deck, where four cars caught fire, reported the Charlotte Observer’s news partner WSOC. The station posted a photo taken by a woman at the airport showing a huge plume of smoke rising into the sky.
