Tickets for the River City Jazz Masters series go on sale soon

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (WAFB) – The public will soon be able to purchase tickets for the 2024-2025 River City Jazz Masters series in Baton Rouge.

According to the organizers, the sale of season tickets starts on Wednesday, August 14th, while the sale of tickets for the individual concerts starts on Wednesday, August 28th. Further information on purchasing tickets can be found here.

The jazz concert series is a collaboration between the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge and the River City Jazz Coalition. All performances take place at the Manship Theater in the Shaw Center for the Arts.

The first concert in the series is expected to feature jazz singer Jazzmeia Horn. There will also be concerts by Emmet Cohen, the Yellowjackets featuring Kurt Elling and Sammy Figuero.

The Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge has released the following information about the concert schedule and performing artists:

  • (November 13, 7:30 p.m.) A native of Dallas, Jazzmeia Horn was named after her jazz-loving grandmother and grew up listening to gospel music in her church. In 2009, she enrolled at the School of Jazz at The New School in New York City, followed by wins at the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition (2013) and the Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Competition (2015). Her 2017 debut album, A sociable visitand the successor of 2019, Love & Liberationboth received Grammy nominations in the category “Best Jazz Vocal Album”. The following year she published her book, Striving from within: The Jazzmeia Horn Approachduring the recording of their 2021 big band album, Love love.
  • (February 20, 7:30 p.m.) A recognized child prodigy who began playing the piano at the age of 3, Emmet Cohen is a versatile American jazz pianist and composer who has become one of the key figures of his generation in music and related arts. Possessing a fluid technique, an innovative sound palette and an extensive repertoire, he plays with the mastery of a seasoned veteran and the passion of an artist fully committed to his medium. His best known professional endeavour is the Masters Legacy Seriesa celebratory series of recordings and interviews honoring legendary jazz musicians, in which he served as both producer and pianist on each album.
  • (March 19, 7:30 p.m.) Manship Theatre is co-producer for TheYellowjackets with Kurt Elling Concert. In their 43-year history, the Yellowjackets have recorded 26 albums, received 18 Grammy nominations – winning two -, completed countless sold-out tours and enjoyed critical acclaim and commercial success worldwide. A two-time Grammy winner, Elling is known for his distinctive, rich sound and his imaginative and individual work. With a unique brand of contemporary beat lyricism and ingenuity in writing vocalese, the Chicago-based musician has expanded the parameters of vocal jazz and increased its vocabulary. The New York Times called Kurt Elling “the most outstanding male jazz vocalist of our time” and he has received 12 Jazz Journalists Awards for “Male Vocalist of the Year.”
  • (May 1st at 7:30pm) Sammy Figuero has long been considered one of music’s leading percussionists, known for his versatility across a wide range of musical styles and for his playing on a variety of percussion instruments, from Latin American percussion – cabasa, tsekere, bongo and guiro – to Turkish, African and First Nations instruments. He has played with jazz greats such as Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Quincy Jones and the Brecker Brothers, as well as pop greats such as David Bowie, Chaka Khan and Mariah Carey.
