After retiring from the NFL following the 2016 season, former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo became one of the hottest names in sports television.
Romo took the NFL by storm in 2017, in large part because he was so different. While some analysts may seem too buttoned up, Romo was quick to inject humor while still offering excellent insight. He even became known for predicting plays based on formations.
In 2020, CBS signed him for a surprising $17 million per season. Since then, however, Romo’s star has lost a lot of its shine.
Romo is no longer the darling of the media, his humor is now criticized as over-the-top and disorganized. The calls for CBS to evolve have become deafening, and Romo recently delved into the subject: Cousin Sal’s successful weekend for The Ringer and FanDuel TV.

Romo acknowledged that some of the criticism is justified, although he said most fans tend to compliment him when they meet him. He also said that working as a quarterback helped him prepare for the tough decisions that come with the job.
“When you play in the NFL, you kind of get a turtleback where things can just come your way and roll off,” Romo said. “But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t affect the people around you or the people you’re around. So you hear things and when you talk about the criticism, I say if you’re on Twitter and leaning on it, it’s not unwarranted.”
Romo said it is the fans who should decide and ultimately do so.
This means that he is aware that it is his job to make the viewing experience as good as possible.
There was a time when this came easily to him, but now he must figure out how to recapture that magic.
