(WISH) — A storm believed to have spawned a tornado in a landslide Sunday evening damaged a building in a Delaware County community and caused additional damage in Jay County, authorities say.

Kyle Johnson of the Delaware County Emergency Management Agency provided photos of roof and partial structural damage to a large commercial building in the Cammack community, a neighborhood in Yorktown. Yorktown is located west of the Delaware County seat of Muncie.

According to the Delaware County Emergency Management Agency, public safety officials reported what appeared to be a funnel cloud in the western part of the county around 7:30 p.m. Sunday. The agency then took the unusual step of activating its outdoor sirens, even though the National Weather Service had not issued a tornado warning.

Shortly after 8 p.m. on Sunday, the National Weather Service in Indianapolis issued a special advisory regarding a landslide observation. The warning affected parts of Delaware and Randolph counties.

The weather service announced on Platform X shortly after 9:30 p.m. on Sunday that it would assess the tornado on Monday and release further information as soon as it was available.

The same storm also caused damage in the city of Portland in Jay County, Delaware County Emergency Management said. On social media, the Jay County Sheriff’s Office reported “heavy damage” in the city of Portland and that Tyson Road was closed. Details were not provided.

Amy Blakely, Jay County’s deputy director of emergency management, told News 8 via email, “Regarding the weather event in Jay County, emergency services are still assessing the situation at this time. We are unable to comment on the status of classes tomorrow and are currently working with the school district.”

Blakely did not specify whether the tornado damaged a school.

Shortly after 8:15 p.m. Sunday, the weather service also issued a warning for a possible landslide in an area stretching from northeastern Marion County to Fishers in Hamilton County and eastward into Madison, Hancock and Henry Counties.

A landshoe is a type of tornado that forms over land and is characterized by a rapidly rotating column of air that touches the ground and a cloud.
