Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma was filmed inhaling laughing gas just days before the season opener

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Yves Bissouma is under internal investigation after filming himself inhaling nitrous oxide (better known as “laughing gas” or “hippie crack”).

In the footage, Bissouma can be seen being hit by a balloon. The Sun reported that the videos were taken on Saturday night after Spurs played Bayern Munich in their final pre-season game.

In a statement, Bissouma said: “I would like to apologise for these videos. This was a serious lack of judgement. I understand how serious this is and the health risks involved and I also take my responsibilities as a footballer and role model very seriously.”

A Spurs spokesman told the Sun: “We are investigating the incidents. This is being treated as an internal matter.”

Bissouma must wait and see whether he will be punished by his club or whether a police investigation will be launched against him, as possession of nitrous oxide with the intention of inhaling it to produce a psychoactive effect is now a criminal offence.

The ban on ‘laughing gas’ came into force in November last year as part of the Government’s action plan against anti-social behaviour. Possible consequences include an unlimited fine, ‘visible community punishment’ and a prison sentence for repeat offenders.

The use of the gas for legitimate reasons, such as in the catering industry or to relieve pain during labor, is still possible.

Bissouma’s apology comes just a week before Spurs kick off their Premier League campaign with an away game against Leicester City on Monday, August 19. The 27-year-old has become a key player for Spurs following his £25 million move from Brighton in 2022.

Last month, Manchester City and England goalkeeper Khiara Keating appeared in court charged with possession of nitrous oxide canisters.

The 20-year-old from Manchester was charged with possession of a Class C drug on June 18 following an investigation by Greater Manchester Police. She was granted unconditional bail along with her mother until a further hearing next month.
