A new store will soon move into the building formerly home to Toys R Us on Hammer Lane in north Stockton.

The new business occupying the 4,600-square-foot retail space is Chuze Fitness, according to the company’s website and a site plan of Pacific Town Center released this year by commercial real estate firm Lee & Associates.

While there is no exact opening date yet for the gym at 718 W. Hammer Lane, it is expected to open in 2025. A company spokesperson did not respond to an email seeking additional information on the gym’s opening by the deadline.

The first Chuze Fitness studio opened in Carlsbad, north of San Diego, in 2008. Since then, the Southern California-based fitness chain has expanded its business to 24 locations across California, including Anaheim, Bakersfield, Fullerton, Long Beach and San Bernardino, according to the company’s website.

The closest locations to Stockton are 5995 Birdcage Centre Lane in Citrus Heights and 6061 Florin Road in Sacramento.

Amenities and membership fees are not currently listed for the Stockton gym. However, the Sacramento location offers amenities such as a recovery studio with percussion therapy equipment, a stretching turf area, a HydroMassage lounge, compression boot therapy and traditional saunas. There is also an indoor theater area with daily movie screenings.

Membership fees range from $9.99 to $49.99, with the higher-tier membership including group exercise classes and unlimited access to all Chuze Fitness locations and the gym’s Kids Club.

Chuze Fitness is the first tenant to move into the former Toys R Us building since the store closed in June 2018 along with its remaining 735 locations across the United States.

Aside from the closure of the popular toy store, Pacific Town Center has seen other changes in recent years. Home furnishings retailer Pier 1 Imports closed in 2020 and Aaron’s Rent-to-Own quickly took its place. TJ Maxx moved to Park West Place on Trinity Parkway in 2023, leaving a still-vacant spot.

Other tenants at Pacific Town Center include Michael’s, Sketchers, Smart & Final, Subway and Panda Express.
