By Thursday afternoon, the number of Louisiana residents without power had fallen to 325,321.

The number of Acadiana residents without electricity is also decreasing.

More than 279,000 Entergy customers are without power following Hurricane Francine, which made landfall in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana, yesterday as a Category 2 storm.

In a news release Thursday morning, officials said most of the power outages occurred in Terrebonne and neighboring Lafourche Parish, with Assumption, Ascension and Jefferson parishes also badly affected.

Phillip May, president and CEO of Entergy Louisiana, said the company had about 6,000 linemen and arborists on site today. He said additional arborists were called because the majority of outages they are seeing involve power lines that have been damaged by trees and branches.

The company also deployed scouts to inspect the lines so that restoration teams could be sent to the right areas as soon as it was safe to do so this morning, May said.

“Today is the first day,” May said. “Our focus is on assessing the damage so we can begin restoration where it is safe to do so.”

The priority is to restore critical infrastructure – hospitals, pumping stations, police and fire stations – May said.

He said he could not yet make any predictions about recovery.

“We know customers are anxious about restoration timelines, but it takes time to assess the many miles of power lines that were impacted by the storm,” May said. “After that, we will be able to announce restoration timelines. Our top priority is safety, so please stay away from our crews and downed power lines.”

May said he did not believe the work would take as long as the reconstruction effort after Hurricane Ida, but could not give any specific information.

“We focused a large work force on this area and sent people directly into the bayou region because we knew the trail would be challenging and that the vegetation would be a significant challenge. We intend to make our assessment as quickly as possible,” he said.

The greatest damage was to power lines and mostly caused by trees and branches, he said.

Deanna Rodriguez, president and CEO of Entergy New Orleans, said about 50,000 of the total outages are in Orleans Parish.

“If you lost power, please know that we are trying to restore power as quickly as possible and we will not stop until everything is back in order,” she said. “Our teams worked through the night on inspections and assessments, which allowed us to be on site quickly this morning. All of our teams were already prepared. Restoration is starting now and you will see a lot of trucks – so please get out of their way.”

Rodriguez also warned citizens about scams that can occur during power outages.

“Scammers are making unsolicited calls offering to turn your power back on,” she said. “We do not accept or charge money to turn your power back on after a weather-related event. If they call you, hang up. If they demand money, please report it at 1-800-ENTERGY.”

Rodriguez asked everyone to be patient.

“We know it’s not ideal. For health and safety reasons, it’s very important to have power,” she said. “We are more than ready to restore power and we thank all the relief crews who have come to our aid. We couldn’t have done it without them. Please be patient and show your support to the men and women on the ground doing dangerous and important work.”

Cleco On Thursday afternoon, it was said that damage was still being assessed and repairs were being carried out. At peak times, about 37,000 Cleco customers were without power, but by Thursday afternoon that number had dropped to about 15,000.

“The hardest hit parishes were Iberia, St. Mary and St. Tammany,” said Clint Robichaux, director of distribution operations and reliability. “Our teams mobilized early this morning and restored power to approximately 15,000 customers, and we continue to make progress.”

After the storm was over, SLEMCO reported about 4,200 power outages across the system, in areas near Rayne, Broussard, Cecilia and Youngsville, with nearly half of the outages occurring in Erath, where a tree knocked down a double power pole supplying two power feeders.

By 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, the company reported that power had been restored to about half of its customers, with the outage in Erath the only major group of people left in the dark. By 10 p.m. Wednesday, that pole had been repaired and lights were back on, the company reported.
