Training notes | Brandon Coleman active against Bucs; Johnny Newton questionable

Washington Commanders rookie offensive tackle Brandon Coleman will play in Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, head coach Dan Quinn said during his press conference on Friday.

Quinn will decide for himself how many snaps Coleman will play and whether he will be in the starting lineup. What the head coach did say, however, was that Coleman has done a “remarkable job” in his recovery.

“He was almost ready for the third preseason game and we just decided this is not the place and time to go to that spot,” Quinn said. “But he’s absolutely ready to go.”

Coleman, who missed most of training camp with a shoulder injury, was confident last week that he would be ready for the season opener. After roster cuts, he was cleared for full activity and fully participated in all practices this week.

Although Quinn would have liked to see Coleman play in the preseason, he still feels comfortable letting the rookie play based on what he showed in the first part of training camp.

“That’s an example of you can only control the things you can. So would it have been better? Yes, but OK, that’s not how it went,” Quinn said. “This player has really put in the work and is really ready to go. So, yeah, we’re excited to have him. Would it have been better for him and everyone else? Of course. But like I said, you can only control what you can, but the player has really put in the work and is really ready to go.”
