Travel strikes in Europe: Flight and train cancellations to expect in August and September

Strikes in which workers stop working to fight for better wages and working conditions occur regularly in Europe.

Strikes are sometimes planned months in advance, but others are only announced at the last minute, so it’s worth checking before you travel.

Germany: Discover airline employees vote for indefinite strikes

Pilots and cabin crew at the airline Discover have voted in favor of strike action in two separate votes.

They will go on strike if the airline, a subsidiary of Lufthansa, does not meet their demands regarding wages and working conditions.

This means there could now be unlimited strikes on Discover flights.

The airline has a fleet of 27 aircraft operating routes to holiday destinations across Europe and overseas from its base in Frankfurt and Munich.

Italy: No strikes allowed during peak summer season

In Italy, the transport sector is banned from striking between July 27 and September 5, when most Italians are on holiday, so disruptions are unlikely in mid-summer.

Alicante Airport: Security staff strike

The strikes by security staff at the Spanish airport Alicante-Elche have been expanded.

Originally, a five-day strike was planned from August 1 to 4, but further dates have since been added: August 15, 16, 17, 18, 30 and 31.

The airport for the Costa Blanca will be affected between 8:30-9:30 a.m. and 6:00-7:00 p.m. local time.

British tour operator Jet2, which uses the airport for its package holidays, wrote on its website: “The strike is supported by the security services at the airport and will lead to congestion at security checks.” It advised passengers to arrive at the airport on time.

However, airport operator Aena stated that there had been no significant delays in operations at Alicante so far.

Strikes on Scottish trains possible

If the planned strikes in Scotland take place, there could be delays or cancellations in train services.

ScotRail’s 1,300 drivers will vote on whether to strike or take other action as they are locked in a pay dispute with union Aslef.

ScotRail operates trains between major tourist destinations such as EdinburghGlasgow, Aberdeen and Inverness.

Dates for the possible strikes have not yet been announced, but they could impact the Edinburgh Festival what happens in August.

France: Motorway strikes affect summer holidays

In protest against the declining number of staff, workers on the French motorways Autoroutes du Sud (ASF) and Vinci have begun a summer strike.

The weekend strikes earlier this month were attended by holidaymakers embarking on their first trip of the summer break.

It is still unclear whether there will be further strike action in the coming weeks.

Paris airport workers call off strike in July

Paris airports were threatened with Olympic gameswith unions calling for a strike on July 17, just 10 days before the start of the sporting event.

However, the strike was called off at the last minute on Tuesday after workers reached an agreement on wages, demanding that the bonuses offered to some workers be applied to all employees.

Air traffic at Roissy-Charles de Gaulle and Orly airports will now continue as usual.

Could strikes affect the Paris Olympics?

CGT-RATP union members announced a seven-month strike from February 5 to September 9, which could affect bus services in the Ile-de-France region and Subway network – also during the Olympic Games this summer.

However, the French Senate passed a bill on April 9 that allows the state to ban transport strikes for set periods each year to prevent disruptions during major events such as Paris-2024In addition, a longer strike lead time and increased minimum service obligations are demanded.

The bill faces opposition and must be approved by the French National Assembly before it can come into force.

Employees of the state transport company say they are striking because of high wages.

Netherlands: Public transport strikes planned for September

A strike in public transport has been announced in the largest cities in the Netherlands for 12 SeptemberFurther strikes are possible.

This comes ahead of the Cabinet’s draft budget, which workers hope will also include plans to allow people in physically demanding jobs to retire earlier.
