Traveler tried to board plane at Tampa Airport with false ID: TSA

TAMPA, FL — A traveler who attempted to use a false ID and another person’s boarding pass was arrested at Tampa International Airport on August 15, according to a news release from the Transportation Security Administration.

The person was caught by Justin Causby, a TSA officer in Tampa, using facial recognition software.
Causby was working his shift on Airfield A when the individual inserted a driver’s license into the credential authentication technology, or CAT-2 device, while a photograph was taken and compared to the ID presented.

The device indicated a mismatch and when Causby checked the driver’s license and boarding pass, he quickly realized that the person was using documents belonging to someone else, the TSA said.

Causby notified a supervisor, who called Tampa International Airport police to investigate further. The individual was arrested following the investigation.

CAT-2 devices are equipped with cameras on tablets and are used to match the face of the person at the checkpoint with the face on the traveler’s identification, such as a driver’s license or passport. The technology improves detection capabilities for identifying fake documents at the security checkpoint.
