Treasure hunters head to “Michigan’s longest garage sale”

Treasure hunters head to “Michigan’s longest garage sale”

(WXYZ — Hundreds of people are currently traveling down U.S. 12 in southern Michigan, searching for hidden treasures, taking part in what is considered Michigan’s longest garage sale.

Today through Sunday is the US 12 Heritage Trail Garage Sale, a series of garage sales that stretch from Detroit to New Buffalo.

More than 200 miles of hidden treasures await you!

Shari Wilcox, who is participating in the garage sale, describes the “creepy dolls that give you a little fright if you look too closely.”

Tom Miller said he goes to the flea market every year.

“Oh, this was a pretty unique product, a gummy bear machine,” he said.

Shari said people start “at dawn” in Ypsilanti and then move as far west as possible along U.S. 12.

Tom said he would probably visit about 20 to 25 flea markets today.

Rhonda Wolff said she did it at least four or five times.

Along the way you will find a little bit of everything, and I mean everything.

“What do you think is the strangest thing you have here?” I asked.

“I’d say the weirdest thing is probably these guys here,” said Harry.

You could describe them as little devil angel babies.

“Some people like them, some people find them cute,” he said.

Homeowners are attending the sale. Shari said between 80 and 100 people have been there in the last three hours.

Entrepreneurs also take part.

“Many of them, I hear, are making 40 percent of their annual income,” said Brian Shockley, who was shopping at the sale.

Many mark it as a holiday in their calendars.

“It’s not a birthday present or anything, it’s a kind of ‘what stuff did you find?'” said Tom.

But many tell me that the memories you collect along the way are the real treasure.

You still have until Sunday to go on your own treasure hunt.
