I first learned about Casa, the West Village haunt, when my doctor took me to the Khe-Yo space, but I was told it was a secret. Then John Willenbecher struck up a conversation (and got this photo of the shed being demolished) with an upstairs neighbor of the Duane Street space, who confirmed it. And now it’s definitely here on Instagram.

The Brazilian comfort food restaurant closed in December 2022, after nearly 25 years on the corner of Bedford and Commerce (a dream location, by the way), leaving it, they said, “to the next magician.”

Eater put it on its 2019 list of best Brazilian dishes, which is saying something since the No. 1 and No. 2 spots went to Ironbound in Newark.

It’s an exciting addition to the neighborhood in a space I’ve always thought was charming (if dark).

Robert Sietsema and Carla Vianna of Eater wrote: Casa, which translates to “home,” is a restaurant that lives up to its name. It’s a rustic corner space with countless windows overlooking Bedford Street and a tiny bar with a few stools in front for waiting. It serves traditional Brazilian comfort food, but with a high level of execution – including a top-notch Brazilian stroganoff, where tender strips of beef and mushrooms are drenched in a thick tomato-based cream and neatly plated with a side of white rice and crispy potato sticks. Other classics include picanha (sirloin) served with broccoli rice, miniature fried empanadas and bobó de camarão, shrimp in a thick yuca purée with coconut milk, tomatoes and onions.
