TSA opens new security checkpoints at Portland International Airport

Summary

  • Portland International Airport’s new terminal offers more space and more modern security, providing an improved travel experience.
  • Enhanced security screening includes advanced technology for easier navigation and more efficient operations.
  • The new main terminal at PDX is twice the size, inspired by local landscapes and offers travelers a welcoming design.

The largest airport in the US state of Oregon, Portland International Airport (PDX) is about to open its modernized main terminal, which will include several new security checkpoints to speed up travelers’ arrival. Over 1,000 workers have been modernizing the terminal area during the remodeling. Located just six miles from downtown Portland, the airport accounts for 90% of the state’s total passenger traffic and 95% of its air cargo. Its site spans 3,000 acres (1,200 hectares).

An improved travel experience

Travelers who have visited the airport recently will agree that transiting through the airport has been difficult in recent years due to the very tight space in the ticket lobby and the old security checkpoint. The new area will alleviate this as it is much more spacious and will improve the travel experience. During the design phase in 2015-2016, the main focus was on capacity and ensuring that the long wait times were not comparable to other major airports across the country.

Improved security controls

In addition to making it easier for travelers to navigate the terminal, TSA’s advanced screening technologies will make it easier for travelers to remove certain items from carry-on luggage. Kathleen McDonald, TSA’s federal security director in Oregon, noted:

“The first thing you’ll see is the automated screening lane, which provides travelers with a container. They can unpack everything and keep everything in their bag that’s really important. “The second technology that makes travelers’ jobs easier is our X-ray machine. This is the same machine used in the medical field. It allows officers to view images in 3D.”

The new security checkpoints are expected to open to the public starting next Wednesday, at which time the new terminal will also welcome the first passengers to and from the new and improved Portland International Airport.

New main terminal

With new ticket, lobby and security areas nearly double the size, more space will be created for Pacific Northwest travelers. At PDX, the new terminal was inspired by the region’s lush landscapes, working with 11 local forests to provide Douglas fir fur for the terminal’s wood ceiling. Inside the main terminal, it’s designed to feel like you’re walking through the forest, with a wood lattice ceiling stretching across the bright space with 49 solar-protection windows (skylights). Inside, there will be an array of deciduous trees and plants, as well as a number of new shops and food options.
