DUBLIN (Reuters) – Twelve people on a Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Ireland were injured in turbulence, Dublin Airport said on Sunday, adding that the plane landed safely and on schedule.

Flight QR017, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, landed shortly before 1pm Dublin time (12:00 GMT), the airport said.

“Upon landing, the aircraft was met by emergency services, including Airport Police and our Fire and Emergency Services Department, as six passengers and six crew members (12 in total) on board reported injuries after the aircraft encountered turbulence while flying over Turkey,” Dublin Airport said in a statement.

Irish broadcaster RTE, citing passengers arriving at the airport, said the incident lasted less than 20 seconds and occurred during food and drink distribution.

Qatar Airways said in a statement that a “small number” of passengers and crew suffered minor injuries during the flight and were receiving medical treatment.

The airline did not comment directly on the turbulence, but said the matter was the subject of an internal investigation.

The incident occurred five days after a Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore was forced to land in Bangkok due to severe turbulence, leaving a 73-year-old British man dead and 20 others in intensive care.

Turbulence-related aviation accidents are the most common type of accident, according to a 2021 study by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board.

The US agency found that between 2009 and 2018, more than a third of all reported aviation accidents were caused by turbulence. Most of these resulted in one or more serious injuries but no damage to the aircraft.
