Twins place Byron Buxton on injured list, Louie Varland moves to St. Paul – Twin Cities

The Twins were looking to make a number of personnel decisions before their first pitch tonight at 7:05 p.m. against the Rangers in Arlington, Texas.

Most importantly, the team placed Byron Buxton on the 10-day injured list, effective Monday, because of right hip soreness. The team also plans to recall infielder Edouard Julien from Class AAA St. Paul to take his place on the active 26-man roster.

Buxton pulled out after a batting appearance in Monday’s 8-3 win over Kansas City and hasn’t played since. An MRI of his hip was negative, but manager Rocco Baldelli said Wednesday the Twins wanted to give him time to recover. The center fielder is not with the team in Texas.

In addition, the Twins have sent Louie Varland back to St. Paul. The right-hander made his first major league start of the season in Wednesday’s 4-1 loss to the Royals. To take his place on the active roster, the Twins have brought back right-hander Ronny Henriquez from the Saints.

Varland was a spot starter for the Twins, who wanted to give their starters an extra day of rest before the current seven-game road series. Under MLB rules, he won’t be available to play until August 30.

Henriquez has a 1-2 record with a 3.44 earned run average (ERA) in 34 appearances (three starts) with the Twins this season.
