Two nights of free Shakespeare in Agawam Park with Hip to Hip Theatre

Two nights of free Shakespeare in Agawam Park with Hip to Hip Theatre

Fresh from their New York City tour, Hip to Hip Theatre Company offers Southampton audiences the opportunity to enjoy one of Shakespeare’s late romances and one of his most beloved comedies. “The Winter’s Tale,” directed by David Frederick Mould, and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” directed by Jason Marr, will be performed in rotating repertory under the stars in Agawam Park on Friday, August 23 and Saturday, August 24. Both performances begin at 7:30 p.m. and admission is free. The company also presents “Kids & the Classics,” a workshop for children, before each performance.

“We keep the repertory alive,” said Joy Marr, co-founder of Hip to Hip Theatre, adding that in repertory, a drama group rehearses several plays and performs them in rotation. “It’s a feat of memorization and talent to see the actors move from show to show. This year, it’s especially amazing because each actor plays multiple roles in each show, which means they’re preparing four to five Shakespeare roles at once.”

The repertory system also offers aspiring actors the opportunity to work with more experienced professionals. Former members of the troupe have appeared this year in “Mean Girls,” the musical film “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” and in major regional theaters across the United States.

“It is an honor to be part of these young actors’ journey,” added Marr.

For the past 17 years, Hip to Hip has been exploring the canon of Shakespeare’s plays. Of the 38 plays – including some that Shakespeare probably co-wrote – Hip to Hip has produced 28 of them.

In “The Winter’s Tale,” performed Friday night, August 23, at Agawam Park, King Leontes falsely accuses his pregnant wife of infidelity to his best friend. Consumed by jealousy, he makes a series of disastrous decisions that tear his family apart and abandon his newborn daughter. Can time bring healing and reconciliation 16 years later?

“I find that audiences are captivated by Shakespeare’s interpretation of this story, from the powerful and emotional first acts to the surprising final scene,” explained the play’s director, David Frederick Mold. “It is a decades-long journey of personal and political reconciliation and redemption. I am thrilled to finally have the chance to direct this play, which has fascinated me since I first saw it over 30 years ago in a riveting production at the Public Theater directed by James Lapine. It is an artistic delight to explore the play’s psychology, emotional pain and various storylines about the power of love.”

On Saturday evening, August 24, Hip to Hip Theatre will perform A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which tells the story of four young lovers who escape the tyranny of the court to find love in an enchanted forest. On the same night and in the same forest, the King and Queen of the fairies declare war on each other, and a group of amateur actors meet to rehearse a play. See what happens when a mischievous goblin named Puck weaves their three stories into one.

“‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ is Shakespeare’s most popular play for a reason,” said director Jason Marr. “I’m working on it for the fifth time now and I’m still discovering new levels of genius. Combining it with ‘The Winter’s Tale’ offers audiences an additional treat as the plays complement each other so well. Beyond the summer-winter contrast, they offer thematic echoes of love and marriage, personal freedom, magic and the healing power of nature.”

Both performances will be preceded by “Kids & the Classics,” a companion piece to Hip to Hip’s “Free Shakespeare in the Parks” program, at 7 p.m. This free, interactive workshop takes place 30 minutes before each performance and is designed for children ages 4 to 12. It gives children the opportunity to interact with the text by looking at the characters and situations and making connections to their own lives through dramatic play and careful reading of the text.

Spectators are encouraged to bring a blanket or low chairs and picnic food and enjoy Shakespeare in the open air. No tickets are required. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The repertoire includes: Neev Bar-David, Konnor Brown, Chaunice Chapman, Nicole Marie Hunt, Dayron Leon, Axel Marr, Bree Marr, Jason Marr, Joy Marr, Mikaya Martin, Nancy Nichols, Parmeet Singh and Stephanie Jeane Toussaint.

The production team includes: costume designer Nancy Nichols, production stage manager Timmy Costello, assistant director Anna Belden, sound designer Terry Chun, costume assistants Mikayla Carleo and Kiki Sanchez, and production assistant Xavier Rodriguez.
