Two Russian sailors die from gas poisoning on a ship in Türkiye

Two Russian sailors died from gas poisoning in an accident on a cargo ship in Turkey.

The website Bursada Bugun reported that the incident occurred on Friday on the 6,300 dwt Navis-2 (built in 2019) as the ship was waiting in Bandirma Bay off Balikesir.

The ship was supposed to dock in the harbor.

The victims were named as 46-year-old Konstantin Martynov and 52-year-old Dmitrii Mochalov.

Authorities found their bodies in a cargo hold.

Mochalov is said to have fallen into the narrow space after being exposed to poisonous gas when the hatch cover was opened.

How his colleague got into the cargo hold is unclear.

Command teams and paramedics from the Bandirma Coast Guard entered the cargo hold wearing protective gear.

In addition, on-site inspections were carried out by chemical and biological exporters.

No arrests recorded

The autopsy will be performed at the local hospital.

The ship had left the port of Yeisk in Russia with 5,000 tons of animal feed on board.

The owner of the Navis-2 is the United Shipping Co. from Moscow. The company was asked for a comment.

The vessel does not present any deficiencies when detained by the port State.

The company has eight cargo ships that normally operate in Russian waters.

The Russian insurer Ingosstrakh is responsible for insuring the fleet.
