Sons of stallions bred in California Smiling Tiger And Union Rags sold for $42,000 each, taking first place at the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association’s Northern California Yearling and Racing Age Auction held August 13 at the Alameda County Fairgrounds.

Old English Rancho bred the Smiling Tiger colt (Hip 47) out of Grade 2 winner Brooke’s Halo (Southern Halo). Trainer Jeff Bonde purchased the colt on consignment from agent Harris Farms. Brooke’s Halo has also produced eight winners, including several Black Type Stakes winners Rock and Fame which later produced the Class 3 winner Little Vic a son of Pranks .

Michael Nentwig bought the Union Rags colt (Hip 5), the first foal from the stakes-winning Graz mare September Secret who is a half-sister to stakes winner Cee’s The Point. Checkmate Thoroughbreds has taken the colt on consignment and bred her.

Nentwig made one other purchase, a $26,000 yearling colt (Hip 12) by Clubhouse Ride named Help Me Mr Wizard, which made him the auction’s leading buyer by total expenditure. Checkmate Thoroughbred consigned Hip 12, bred by Dan Eplin out of the stakes-placed Attila’s Storm daughter Stormy Day.

81 of the yearlings sold for $481,900, for an average of $5,949 and a median of $3,700. 13 of the non-yearlings sold for $58,600, for an average of $4,508 and a median of $3,500.
