Street Rebs

As Lane Kiffin As mentioned every year around this time, the first road trip of the season with a new team is never easy — especially in the transfer portal era, where larger portions of rosters seem to change every year. The Rebels lost their first road game at Alabama last year. In 2022, Ole Miss took a road trip to an ACC opponent in Week 3 of the season, and it went well: a dominant 42-0 victory over Georgia Tech in Atlanta. The Rebels will look to repeat that in Winston-Salem.

Wake’s SEC success
Wake Forest has won its last four games against SEC opponents and has a perfect 4-0 record under current head coach Dave Clawson. It’s the second-longest active SEC winning streak in the nation behind Stanford’s current six-game streak. The Demon Deacons have two regular season wins against Vanderbilt and bowl wins against Texas A&M and Missouri. Can they make it five against the fifth-seeded Rebels?

Absolute dominance

Ole Miss has been the most dominant team in college football over the past two weeks. The Rebels lead the nation with 128 points scored and are third with just three points allowed. Their plus-125 differential is easily the best in the nation. Will that dominance continue as they now face a P4 opponent?

Air superiority

Perhaps the most telling matchup of the game will be Wake Forest’s passing attack versus Ole Miss’ secondary. The Demon Deacons rank fifth in the nation with 361.5 passing yards per game, led by veteran quarterback Hank Bachmeier, who has started 37 games in his career. If there’s a weakness to be found with the Rebels so far, it’s the secondary, where the Rebels rank just 69th in the nation with 198.0 passing yards allowed per game.

Ground war

While Wake Forest will likely try to be successful in the passing game, Tre Harris reported this week that the Rebels will primarily strengthen their running game and defense. Ole Miss ran Henry Parrish, Jr. four times for 51 yards on the first drive last week alone. Look for Kiffin and Co. to establish the run early again to force the secondary to Jaxson Dart and the passing game.
