Unknown man beats 71-year-old man in busy subway station in New York City: police

A stranger beat an elderly man after refusing to allow him to get into an elevator during evening rush hour at a busy subway station in Lower Manhattan, police said.

The 71-year-old victim was attempting to use the elevator from the southbound B, D, F and M platforms at the Broadway-Lafayette subway station around 7:45 p.m. on Aug. 10 when the attacker prevented him from boarding, police and sources said.

The attacker then pushed him and punched him in the face several times, causing him to fall to the ground and hit his head on the platform, police said.

The victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition and treated for a cut to the head and bruising and swelling to the face, authorities said.

A surveillance image released by the NYPD late Wednesday night shows the attacker wearing a red and black Atlanta Hawks jacket, black pants and white sneakers and pushing a handcart.

He was still at large on Friday.
