Unusual player becomes unsung hero of Pittsburgh Steelers in victory over Falcons

ATLANTA– When injuries occur, players sometimes find themselves in unusual situations. When Pittsburgh Steelers punter Cameron Johnston was injured, two players were put in situations they weren’t normally familiar with.

Kicker Chris Boswell was forced to punt for the first time since his rookie season, and it was the first time he had punted in a live game since he was at Rice College over a decade ago. Another player, however, did something he had never done before.

Wide receiver Scotty Miller, who came into the game at two different spots due to injury, had to be the holder on Boswell’s final field goal. Boswell and Miller ran through it only once on Friday, just in case. He made a perfect hold and allowed Boswell to make the kick. Miller was also used as a guard after Darius Rush had to be evaluated for a concussion. On Boswell’s punt, it was Miller’s excellent coverage tackle that limited the punt return to just one yard.

Miller received much praise for his efforts and played a key role in the Steelers’ victory.

“We had some unique contributions today, like Scotty Miller as a backup guard. Look at your flip card, man. You don’t see a backup guard on that flip card. So we’re really thankful for unique skills to help us win,” said head coach Mike Tomlin.

Miller said after the game he was a little star-struck. Boswell just told him to hold the ball so he could drive it. He did just that, shooting it high and through. Miller wasn’t even the backup for most of training camp, and didn’t take over that job until the Steelers trimmed their roster to 53 players.

“So far this week it’s been Scotty. We had to wait until the roster was finalized last week. I mean, now that we’re in this situation, we’re going to work on it a lot more,” Boswell said after the game.

With Johnston out for the rest of the season with a serious knee injury, the Steelers will need to find a new punter. Typically, that punter takes on the role of holder for Boswell, but in the future, Miller could be that player. Regardless, the Steelers used Miller in a situation where they never knew they would need him, and he helped them get the win.
