The decision on the use of Utah quarterback Cam Rising, who is expected to return on Saturday against Oklahoma State, was reportedly not made until shortly before the start of the game.

The Utes quarterback is expected to return to Utah’s offense after suffering a hand injury and missing Week 3 against Utah State. However, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported Saturday morning that he is not a sure-fire starter and will not be 100% when he takes the field.

Rising, who has battled multiple injuries over the course of his seven seasons of college football, suffered a hand injury in the second quarter of Utah’s win over Baylor in Week 2.

Here’s another look at Rising’s injury and his status for Saturday’s game against Oklahoma State:

Is Cam Rising playing today? Utah QB status vs. Oklahoma State

After missing last week’s rivalry game against Utah State, Rising was expected to play after his teammate, wide receiver Dorian Singer, confirmed it earlier this week while speaking to the assembled media in Salt Lake City.

“He’ll be ready this week,” Singer said. “We expect the same thing he did then, even better. We expect the whole offense to rally around him, all the guys to rally around him, and we’ll go out and get this thing.”

However, Utah coach Kyle Whittingham was not as forthcoming about Rising’s status as Singer earlier this week, but said there was “hope” they would get Rising back.

“Boy, we hope so. We really hope so. That would be ideal,” Whittingham said.

A decision will now be made at the beginning of the game, according to Thamel, who hinted that Rising will at least try to play. While it may be a cover-up on Utah’s part following Singer’s confirmation of his return, it is clear that Rising’s cards are not 100% in the bag yet.

Cam Rising injured

Rising suffered a hand injury in the turbulent minutes of the second quarter of Utah’s game against Baylor in Week 2. The injury occurred while running along the Baylor sideline looking for a receiver. Rising threw the ball away but was knocked into the Baylor water cooler by Bears defender Treven Ma’ae.

After a locker room examination at halftime, Utah coach Fox’s broadcast showed Rising returning to the field in the second half in civilian clothes with his middle and ring fingers wrapped in athletic tape.
