Utica man arrested for breaking into liquor store, stealing ATM and bottles

A Utica man was arrested following a break-in at the Lotus Garden on King Street in Utica.

On August 16, Utica Police were dispatched to Steuben Park to investigate a threatening incident involving an axe.

Police said they were directed to a home in Steuben Park where the suspect ran. When police knocked on the door, they were able to locate a person matching the suspect’s description. He was detained pending the outcome of the investigation.

As officers began speaking to individuals in the area, they learned that in the previous hours they had seen the man walking down the street with various liquor bottles and an ATM in a large trash can. When it was learned that the victim of the threat investigation did not wish to press charges, the attention of the investigation turned to the suspicious activity and property.

Patrol units then began searching local businesses. While checking the Lotus Garden on King Street, they noticed several broken windows at the front of the store. The owners were contacted and confirmed that an ATM and several bottles of liquor had been stolen during the break-in.

Due to all the events, the case was handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department. After receiving further evidence, 42-year-old John Coronado was charged with:

  • Third degree burglary
  • Fourth degree criminal damage
  • Petty theft
